China has already overtaken Japan as the world’s second largest label producer. India’s label industry will hit $ 1 billion in shipments during 2007 and almost double by 2010 to account for some 6.5% of world output.

n the last few years, the functions of a label have been expanded to not only provide decoration, aesthetics, information and brand identity but to also address additional requirements like brand security, product authentication, tamper evidence, inventory control, providing a means of tracking and tracing or surveillance across the entire supply chain and in logistics management. Very soon, we can also expect to see a large number of ‘smart’ labels that highlight information from storage abuse to time-expired packages. Labels and tags are also being increasingly called upon to provide individual, unique and infallible identification as well as to be able to be ‘read’ and/or ‘written upon using smart technologies like smart cards, biometrics and RFID. Indeed, it is these extra demands that seem to provide the highest value opportunity for the growth of the label business.
