In a race to be and project itself as a responsible corporate citizen, every leading company in the world is trying to innovate environment-friendly ways for production and companies associated with the packaging industry are no exception. Coca-Cola India is planning to launch new PET bottles, which will use 30% ethanol, a plant-based product derived from molasses. Molasses is produced by fermenting and distilling corn, barley, sugar cane and wheat. Coca Cola is using molasses derived from sugar canes and it will source ethanol from Brazil —world’s largest producer of sugar cane—for manufacturing bottles for the Indian market. The trademark name of plant-based bottles of Coca-Cola is PlantBottle and these bottles are already available in 20 countries, such as Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Sweden and the United States on brands like Bonaqua Water, Barqs, Coca-Cola, DASANI, Fresca, iLOHAS, Sokenbicha, Sprite, and vitaminwater.
