The Avery Dennison Foundation celebrated the first anniversary of its sponsorships of a faculty chair position in association with the SIES School of Packaging in Mumbai in August 2009. The sponsorships, totalling US$ 50,000 to date, have created 121 new enrolment opportunities for students who are interested in joining the packaging industry.

“In the world of packaging, innovations are a key to a product’s life cycle, enhanced shelf-appeal and sales. There is tremendous opportunity for talent in the industry, and our sponsorship provides exciting new opportunities for Indian packagers as well as increased focus on specialised training,” said Raj Srinivasan, Managing Director, Avery Dennison, India.
Launched last year, the sponsorship provides grants for the school to provide education and training in self-adhesive technology for the Graduate Technology Course in the Packaging and Packaging Management Program and the Post Graduate Diploma in Packaging Science and Technology. These programs now include modules on self-adhesive technology, including education on raw materials, conversion process, printing, production process, quality assessment, label applications, development and environmental concerns.
During the first year of the Avery Dennison Foundation sponsorship in 2008-09 academic year, over 140 students enrolled in this program. During the second year beginning in August 2009, over 120 new packaging students are expected to join.
“The programme is an excellent blend of academics and career development besides meeting a void felt by the industry,” said Professor PV Narayanan of the SIES School of Packaging.
