KAMA adds hologram stamping system to its A3 flatbed die cutter

March 10, 2010 | By PSA desk based on a press release

KAMA, the developer and manufacturer of the ProCut 53, the world’s first A3 flatbed die cutter, is now introducing a hologram stamping system designed specifically for this machine. With its ability to stamp holograms onto the product being processed, the ProCut 53 can now also be used for high quality labeling of print products and packaging. This application opens up an attractive market for ProCut 53 operators because in addition to their decorative effect, holograms are also in great demand as a visible safety marker for copy and brand protection, and this market is growing.

“Requests from Japan, the USA, France and Germany convinced us that we should quickly develop a hologram option for the ProCut 53,” explains KAMA CEO Marcus Tralau. The system has already been a success for the company’s 74-cm format system: “Two out of three of our ProCut 74 die cutters are now being ordered with hot foil or hologram stamping systems.”

The new system for the ProCut 53 works with two separate foil feeders. Working with their individual control systems, motors and special sensors, the feeders operate with a precision of one-tenth of a millimetre. In contrast to the continuous hot foils, holograms have to be positioned under the cliché with absolute precision when they are stamped. Hologram foils use markers on the carrier foil to achieve this. The hologram stamping system of the ProCut 53 has four individually controllable heating zones. Holograms can be applied within a working area of 510 mm x 360 mm. In addition to hologram foils such as the security foils made by the world market leader Kurz, the KAMA module is also capable of processing all kinds of hot foils. The ProCut 53 has an output of up to 3500 sheets per hour when stamping holograms, up to 5,000 sheets per hour for hot foil stamping and up to 6,000 sheets per hour for die cutting and creasing.

An advantage of the ProCut 53 is the fast and simple change-over, taking less than 10 minutes to change from hologram stamping to die cutting or vice versa. That makes the “small” finishing die cutter very flexible and enables printers, bookbinders and finishing businesses to efficiently handle small and mid-sized runs. The broad spectrum of applications also makes the A3 die cutter of interest for digital printing and digital packaging production where heavier paper and finishing is coming into increasing demand.

KAMA first presented the ProCut 53 with the applications cutting, creasing, cold embossing, Braille and hot cutting at Drupa 2008. Since then, 20 of these multifaceted A3 die cutters have been sold worldwide. Germany-based KAMA develops and produces multifunctional automatic die cutters and folder-gluers. Its print finishing machines are currently in use in over 40 different countries around the globe.
