Mergers in the packaging industry such as the one between Amcor and Alcan largely follow the ongoing consolidation in the markets they serve. Both Amcor and Alcan have been active in the tobacco industry, supplying the same brands in different parts of the world. Despite massive anti-smoking campaigns, tobacco still has a huge market, and it is growing. The World Health Organisation estimates that the number of smokers in the world will grow from 1.4 billion in 2009 to 1.7 billion by 2025. Ron Augustin takes a look at this industry from a global and Indian perspective.
