“The first such prototype plant was installed in Mandi in 1974 which was an Indo-German venture. When the plant was running at its full capacity and could not accommodate any more fruit in 1981, the Parwanoo unit was built and it came into production in 1985,” BM Saini, plant manager, Himachal Pradesh Marketing Corporation explains the function of the institution as well as of its Parwanoo plant to PSA’s Rashmi Bhate.

The HPMC fruit processing plant is situated at a bend near the Kalka-Parwanoo toll tax barrier, surrounded by the lush green low rolling Shiwalik hills. HPMC is a Himachal Pradesh government owned body formed in 1974, to help fruit growers sell their produce directly to the market. The agency has collection centres located near the growing areas where fruit is dumped and weighed, and the grower is paid the market value for their produce.
