Seamless tubes are the coming thing but as Amit Kumar of Printotech in Noida told us recently, dental creams have not come in seamless tubes yet, although some of the gel toothpastes where foil is not required have arrived in seamless tubes. Colgate which is the biggest player in toothpaste does not have foil in its current packaging which is a laminated tube with an EVOH barrier. Seamless tubes can also have as many as 5 EVOH layers. Thus in terms of barrier properties, both laminated and seamless are comparable. However, the wall thickness in seamless is 500 microns while in laminated tubes with EVOH it is 320 microns. Since toothpaste is a commodity product, the increased thickness of the material puts considerable pressure on pricing. ...cont´d
